Iron Trail

ROAD TOUR

 Registration is open!

Our longest tour has some history!

This tour loop dates back to the early 1980s when Tour Chief Jim was chair of the local high adventure options for the Boy Scouts in Duluth. Although we’re true to the route and overnight cities, much has changed in 40 years. First, we’ve polished off some rough edges and ditched camping in favor of hotels. Also, our dining has come a long way. Routes also include new paved bike trails on several days.

Guest Health and Safety

All our 2024 tours will operate using the company Safety Plan as amended for Covid for the 2020 season, and it is integral to our tours. Our goal is to provide a safe tour experience for our guests, our staff, and all our lodging and dining partners along the route.

Great Stuff for 2024

Our tour starts with your arrival at Duluth on Saturday, June 15. Duluth is a great town with much to see, so consider arriving a day early for some tourist activities. Sunday June 16, we take a sag ride out of town to our starting place at Island Lake. You’ll ride on the Vermilion Trail, a route dating back to a gold rush, before iron mining took over. Bonus: Today you’ll bike across the highest road bridge in Minnesota, near Virginia!

Go Deep on Monday

Monday, we take a very scenic route north to Tower, and an optional tour of the famous Soudan Mine. Travel over 2500′ underground for an experience you’ll not forget! Lodging tonight at Fortune Bay Resort.

Tuesday on to Ely

On Tuesday, we ride east with a destination of Ely, Gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness! Ely is a great town for our layover, and you’ll have an option for canoe or kayak adventure on Wednesday.

Thursday is our Grand Fondo day, a tumble-down to Lake Superior

There’s an exciting ride Thursday, our longest ride of the week! We start from Ely and head towards Lake Superior. There’s a gradual climb for 42 miles to Isabella, then a race downhill over the next 20+ miles to Beaver Bay, on the Shores of Lake Superior.

Friday, return to Duluth

Big sights today including Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls, Silver Cliff bypass, and finally Two Harbors. Scenic Old Highway 61 provides a gentle backdrop right on Lake Superior. Our tour ends on return to the hotel parking lot about 3 p.m.

How it Breaks Down:

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the thought of biking 300 miles–don’t be! It’s manageable because we’ve engineered the route for you! In addition to our daily itinerary, you’ll have daily printed maps & cue sheets, plus electronic maps from Ride with GPS, to run on your smartphone or bike computer. We have a staff rider on the ground, and support vehicles to help if needed.

What’s Special

We’ve spent time to identify the best route to follow, along with making you aware of sights along the way. Maps, cue sheets, and familiarity with our lodging and dining partners all make for a great tour for you!
